Sample Project (from Week 3 of Digital Learning)
3.07 (70pts) Shopping for Uncle Albert
Congratulations! Your Uncle Albert (What? You didn't know you HAD an Uncle Albert?) has decided to give you $1000 to spend on ELECTRONICS at college. Please create an online shopping list that details how you'll spend this money.
Rules:
1. Spend at least $975 and not a penny over $1000.
2. Though you may buy other stuff like tablets and flash drives and game consoles, you MUST include in your shopping list a 1) laptop, 2) printer/copier, 3) headphones, and 4) speakers for your dorm room.
3. Don't worry about taxes and shipping. Just go to a page of the website where you can screenshot the item, its name and specs, and its price all in one screenshot. That screenshot counts as a purchase.
4. Three websites you are permitted to shop:
Here is a student example (she went back later and embedded the slideshow onto her portfolios, but originally she linked from her portfolio to the presentation):
http://ignitevisions.weebly.com/uncle-albert.html
Using G-Drive for the first time? Click here: https://drive.google.com/start
Your shopping list must be in the form of a Google Presentation (Don't use Weebly's slideshow tools for this, nor Microsoft Powerpoint). If you've never used Google Docs before, you can search for "Google Drive" and sign into Google. You don't need a Gmail account to do that--any email will work--but you do need to Sign Up if you're going to use a non-gmail address.
Google Docs Permissions
When you create a Google Doc or Presentation for someone else to view, you always have to fiddle with the Sharing/Permissions settings. You can share viewing rights to the whole world with a single click (look for blue in the top-right), but until you do, I see a screen that says "You need permission to access this item."
When the sharing permissions are set, then just take that super-long URL from the address bar and make a button or link on your Uncle Albert page that links us to it. Yay!

Capturing Screenshots
You'll find that being able to capture a portion of an image is VERY important in this and other Homespun School courses.
Pixlr Grabber is one screenshot utility I use. Pixlr lets me grab part of any image on the screen, then it automatically creates a web-based pic of that and I can download the file or upload it to one of several websites. Once it's uploaded, then I can link directly to it for use in my websites.
Here's what I did: I searched for "Pixlr Grabber" in Firefox or Chrome, and then I followed the instructions for how to install the addon/extension into my browser.
Once I had the extension installed, it was a piece of cake to start taking screenshots and editing them. Usually I download them onto my computer--and note which folder they saved to--sometimes I leave them online and just link to them. (I save it to imm.io and right click to "copy image location.")

PROJECT CHECKLIST
____ Capture a screenshot of each item you're "buying" and put these into multiple pages on a single Google Presentation. Adjust the sharing so everyone can view it.
____ Finish the slideshow with a page accounting for your purchases and showing that the total is between $975 and $1000.
____ Link to your Google Docs slideshow from your Portfolio page called "Uncle Albert" (or, if you can figure out how, you can "embed" the code instead . . . in GDocs you can find the embed codes under File | Publish | Embed, but really--linking to the presentation is fine).
____ Copy the URL for the "Uncle Albert" page of your Portfolio into the "Turn In" box.
____ Copy/paste this PROJECT CHECKLIST and make sure you've nailed every bullet point with an __x__.
